Looking Back and Living Forward
For the past couple of years, we have worked tirelessly raising funds to film and edit a visual documentary, Looking Back and Living Forward. We are eternally grateful to those that have given their support: Thank you.
Our vision is to bring recognition to a significant family legacy story that we can proudly share and pass on to future generations: a legacy of wacoos (respect). This visual documentary is all about building a bridge between identity, traditional knowledge and language. We understand that co-producing and recording traditional stories is a strong tool for those who share and acknowledge them; it fosters unity, strength, and empowerment.
The family members involved are positively and negatively impacted by Canfor, Pacific Trails Pipeline, and Coastal GasLink. We seek to mend, inspire and sustain a relationship between Kley’ate’ley, Uni’stot’en, and Wet’suwet’en hereditary and elected leadership and community members—both on- and off-reserve. Central to the territory’s decision-making we will give a voice to the community and highlight the average person’s experience.
Our ten day plan for the summer of 2019 will witness many interviews and ceremonies, and complete the remaining storyboards. We estimate a budget of $65,000 (not including taxes) to complete our mission. This does not include the countless hours for post-production. As we travel to more locations, we’ll need additional support in the field. We intend to film Elsie Tiljoe’s naming ceremony; Larry Tiljoe’s headstone feast; the footprints; Sara’s hat; as well as conducting semi-structured interviews with Kley’ate’ley and Dark House elders and members to talk about what wacoos means to them in having previously chosen to live off-reserve, and in the context of proposed pipelines and other development in the territory today.
We are constantly driven by Larry’s determination—in person and spirit—to bring truth and wacoos to the surface. If you can, please help us tell the rest of the story. Contact Pepita or Marion to find out more about how you can support the Kley'ate'ley family legacy.
